Allianz Partners Highlights Risks of Travelling Uninsured

Allianz Partners Highlights Risks of Travelling Uninsured

Recent research conducted by the Insurance Council of Australia (ICA) and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) has unveiled a concerning trend: approximately 14% of Australian travellers embark on international journeys without any form of travel insurance.
This statistic has prompted Allianz Partners to urge Australians to reconsider the importance of securing adequate coverage before travelling abroad.

Damien Arthur, Executive Head of Travel at Allianz Partners Australia, expressed concern over the findings, noting that some travellers opt out of purchasing insurance under the assumption that their destination is safe. However, this perspective overlooks potential risks such as accidents, medical emergencies, and travel disruptions, which can lead to significant financial burdens if uninsured.

The study further revealed that two-thirds (65%) of uninsured travellers consciously chose to forgo coverage. The primary reasons cited include beliefs that the destination was safe (31%), perceptions that insurance was poor value (27%), and confidence in handling emergencies independently (22%).

Particularly vulnerable groups include travellers under 30 and those born overseas, with 23% of individuals in both categories reporting they did not purchase travel insurance for their last trip. Additionally, those visiting friends, relatives, or returning to their home country were more likely to skip coverage, often citing the short duration of their trips or familiarity with the destination as justifications.

Allianz Partners emphasises that unforeseen events can occur regardless of the perceived safety of a destination. For instance, medical emergencies in countries like Japan can result in claims amounting to tens of thousands of dollars, covering expenses such as hospital care, extended accommodation, and repatriation.

To illustrate the importance of travel insurance, consider the experience of Melissa Borody, who became seriously ill during a family ski trip in Japan. Having comprehensive coverage made a significant difference in managing the situation and associated costs.

In light of these findings, Australian travellers are encouraged to prioritise obtaining travel insurance before embarking on international trips. Ensuring adequate coverage can provide peace of mind and financial protection against unexpected incidents that may arise during travel.
