In a significant development for the Australian travel insurance sector, Europ Assistance Australia (EAA) has been granted a general insurance licence by the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA).
This authorisation enables EAA to underwrite its own travel insurance products, marking a pivotal step in its commitment to the Australian market.

Since entering the Australian and New Zealand markets in 2022 through the acquisition of InsureandGo and Tick, EAA has rapidly expanded its presence. The company has established offices in Brisbane and Auckland, complementing its Sydney headquarters, and has formed strategic partnerships with major travel entities such as Flight Centre Travel Group.

With the new licence, EAA can now directly manage product design, pricing, and risk assessment within the Australian regulatory framework. This autonomy is expected to enhance the company's ability to tailor insurance solutions that align closely with the evolving needs of Australian travellers.

In 2025 alone, EAA supported over 1.3 million travellers from Australia and New Zealand through its comprehensive global assistance network. The company employs more than 200 team members locally, underscoring its substantial investment in the region.

Hassen Bennour, CEO of Europ Assistance for Asia Pacific, emphasised the strategic importance of this development, stating that securing the licence is a natural progression in strengthening the group's commitment to the Australian market. He highlighted that Australia is a strategic market for Europ Assistance, and the company is investing to bring the full strength of its global capabilities to local travellers.

For Australian consumers, this move signifies increased competition and potentially more innovative travel insurance products tailored to their specific needs. As EAA takes on the role of underwriter, it is poised to offer more responsive and customised insurance solutions, enhancing the overall travel experience for Australians.
